It’s nearly December, and that means it’s our favorite time of year – Christmas and Tacky Lights Tour season!
If you aren’t familiar, this is a well-known Christmas tradition in Richmond – residents setting up their most creative festive light displays on their homes, decks and lawns, attracting thousands of visitors each year. ‘Tacky’ because the more outlandish it is, the better. It’s a fun festivity with neighbors always trying to outdo one another, so the displays only get wilder and brighter every year.
Did you know that the ho-ho-holiday Tacky Lights tradition dates back to 1882 when an associate of Thomas Edison “stylishly” decorated his Christmas tree with 80 walnut-sized lights?
We’ve certainly come a long way from that one lit tree. And this is a tradition that appears to have a lot more life in it than most.
